“Peri/Post-menopausal and in my mid-forties, I began noticing a sudden loss of strength, balance, and endurance for everyday activities.  Carrying a basket of laundry up or down the stairs had me feeling weak and nervous that I would fall. Filling my arms with groceries for a mad single trip from the car was impossible. Repositioning myself in bed was painful in my shoulders. I noticed range of motion limitations as well. Having always been athletic and strong, I was horrified… and scared. I had new grandchildren and I wanted to play with them. My kids were grown and gone and I wanted to do the things I never had time for. I felt like a dark blanket fell over me with my newfound limitations and I was deeply sad. A friend of mine who was a gym rat invited me to come work out with her at a local gym. She was convinced that I needed to hit heavy weights hard and with furious abandon. So I did. For several months, I blasted my body with giant stacks during too long sessions and starved my muscles of any meaningful nutrition. There was no rest, no love, no intelligence, no focus. Her motivating mantras were harsh and self depreciating. And the words she said to herself during our workouts took root in my brain. I lost weight, felt strong, and was fitting in clothes I hadn’t worn in a while, but my self-talk was toxic. One day, after months of this madness, I was sitting with my husband and scrolling. I muttered, “I hate myself. I’m so disgusting.” He roared, “STOP IT!! STOP SAYING THAT!! You do not talk like that about yourself! What’s wrong? Why would you say that?!?” He was deeply hurt by me utterances and I started to cry. I didn’t know why I said that. He was right. I DIDN’T talk like that about myself or my body.  I had been poisoned by an emotionally abusive workout partner who used any manipulative means possible to project her lack of self love onto me. Misery loves company, right?Scott suggested I reach out to Jamie. He knew of her through associations at his place of work and had heard very good things. He knew that her high level of solid scientific education as a PhD in Biology was a great asset to her work with others. He knew my distress and increasing limitations with my changing body and wanted me to get the help I needed. I had deflected the suggestion before, citing the expense. He knew it was important,  and we agreed that it would be a worthwhile investment.  

I met with Jamie at the height of the COVID pandemic.  Gyms had just re-opened. I was working as a nurse and the weight of the world was on my heart. I was buried in grief and isolation — literally and figuratively. Jamie assessed my body mechanics and we discussed my goals — I wanted to be a strong healthy grandma who was up for ANYTHING and any adventures with my grandkids! Jamie used her vast knowledge of body mechanics and balance to develop an efficient and surgically focused strength and mobility routine that was custom designed for ME and my amazing,  wonderful body! She taught me how to untangle my sick and knotted muscles, and  to built major flexibility, stability, and balance with every purposeful move. She breathed life into my weary soul with words of hope and kindness. And she showed me that my limitations were NOT some age and hormone related progressive decline I had no control over. She PROVED to me, as I participated in my body’s miraculous recovery of balance and strength, that the right movements, applied with the right resistance, with the right focus at the right time were what I needed to come back to life. I spent more than a year with her with weekly workouts that targeted my areas of need. And she taught me how to PAY ATTENTION to what my body needed. She also helped me to understand the absolute importance of rest and recovery. And she did it with unwavering support and compassion. So many tears were shed that year — tears of joy, tears of realization, tears of grief in our collective loss, and tears of release as I let go of unhealthy thinking. I never did cry from pain, though. Pain was a signal to stop and adjust. Or stop and re-think. My body spoke to me and I finally FINALLY listened!! Jamie also taught me the immeasurable value of rest and recovery. I learned to balance my hard work with hard rest. And that the human body is an amazing machine when it is given what it needs to thrive.

As Jamie has continued to build her own knowledge base, we have moved into focused nutritional work. Through her brilliant understanding of nutritional science, chemistry, and hormone balancing, I have achieved a new level of healthy living that never would have been possible. Jamie is a compassionate healer. She uses her extensive education and certifications to bring true, deep healing to her clients. Our bodies remember.  Our bodies keep a record, and my application of her loving approach and SOLID understanding of the principles of balance have helped my body recover from the trauma of living at a level I didn’t know existed. Her faithful coaching and willingness to spend the time with me to truly understand my needs has been so affirming! And my faithful application of her teaching has brought me phenomenal results. I approach every day with confidence, knowing that I can do WHATEVER needs to be done because my body is strong and well fed, my hormones are being addressed, my heart and mind are free of negative self talk. 

Life is really hard. And as a “force multiplier” at work and within my family, I now understand the absolute importance of taking the time to give my ‘meat machine’ what it needs to share my own love and light with those around me. Working with Jamie has been an investment that has given me a high return!  I recommend her to my nurse friends all the time. Caregivers need to care for themselves at a MINIMUM as much as they care for others. I have sought to eliminated “unbalance” from my life, and Jamie has been a huge part of that journey. I have so much farther to go, but the walk I started 3 years ago with Jamie has been worth every step. I have new and different goals now, and Jamie is helping me to feel the best at the different stages of my life. New needs come up and we talk about it. New weaknesses are uncovered and we address them. New unbalances show themsleves, and Jamie helps me to problem solve. I know I am worth every bit of planning, preparation, and execution she encourages. And I am so very thankful for her presence!!
